Fujifilm X100F

While Fujifilm has long been known as a manufacturer of high-quality 35mm film stock, the company initially struggled to make an impact after the transition to digital. That all changed, pretty much overnight, with the launch of the original X100 model in 2010.This innovative and hugely stylish fixed-lens premium compact was the first model to grace Fujifilm’s premium X-series range and signalled a new direction for the company. Since then, Fujifilm has gone from strength to strength.

Released in the spring of 2017, the X100F is the fourth and latest model in the X100 series (the ‘F’ stands for ‘Four’). While it retains the distinctive retro rangefinder styling and fixed 23mm f/2 lens of its predecessors, a number of fairly significant improvements have been made internally – most notably to the camera’s effective resolution and autofocus system. Whereas the X100F’s predecessor – 2014’s X100T – was equipped with a 16.3-million-pixel APS-C sensor and a 41-point AF system, the X100F gets a 24.3-million-pixel APS-C sensor and a much improved 91-point AF system.

Elsewhere, the X100F sticks with the excellent 2.36M dot hybrid viewfinder of its previous models. This has always been a major selling point of the X100 series and enables the viewfinder to be used either optically (with superimposed framing guides for greater accuracy), or as a regular electronic viewfinder with 100% coverage. While there’s no support for 4K video recording, the X100F can record 1080p Full HD video at up to 60fps.

One of the things we like most about the X100F is its sublime handling. The shutter speed dial on the top-plate works brilliantly in tandem with the aperture ring positioned around the base of the lens to provide a handling experience that’s as engaging as it is old-school. In addition, Fujifilm has introduced a dedicated AF-point joystick to the back of the X100F, which makes setting the active AF point much quicker and easier than with previous models.
