Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

Amateur Photographer

Canon’s 5D range has long been a favourite of enthusiast photographers looking for a generously featured, highly customisable and solidly built full-frame DSLR.Indeed, the original Canon EOS 5D model that came out in 2005 is generally considered to have been the first ‘affordable’ full-frame DSLR to hit the market, with its £2,500 launch price being around half that of the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, which was the camera of choice for many professional photographers at the time.

Since 2005 the 5D range has undergone three full revisions, with the latest version being the 5D Mark IV, released in the autumn of 2016. While previous generations saw the introduction of innovative new features and technology, more up-to-date hardware and ever higher resolution sensors, Canon’s real achievement with the 5D range has been to retain the camera’s all-round appeal while keeping it competitively priced.

Built around a 30.4-million-pixel full-frame CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 6+ image processors, the 5D Mark IV combines speedy performance with exceptional image quality to produce a fantastic all-round DSLR. Whether you’re using the camera’s 7fps maximum burst speed to shoot fast-moving action or shooting expansive landscapes with the aid of a tripod, the 5D Mark IV can be relied on to capture exceptionally clean-looking images with vibrant yet natural-looking colour and plenty of fine detail.

In addition the 5D Mark IV is one of only a handful of full-frame DSLRs that supports 4K video capture, giving videographers the opportunity to take advantage of Canon’s massive lens collection for some truly cinematic footage. Throw in its tank-like and fully weather-sealed construction, dual memory card slots, an exceptionally large and bright 100% optical viewfinder, built-in Wi-Fi and touchscreen control, and the EOS 5D Mark IV is, without doubt, the best 5D Canon has yet produced.
